How to prevent an e-cig from exploding

Electronic cigarettes (or vapes) have had several cases of injuries and even deaths caused by the pen exploding during or after use. Although these incidents are rare, there are steps users can take to prevent e cigs from exploding.

Exploding e cigarettes

Common faults with e cigarettes are often attributed to the construction of the pen itself, with “mechanical mods” — those lacking an inner circuitry which regulates the voltage used by the device — more likely to incur burns and fire. The cylindrical design of an e cigarette makes it prone to fire due to having structural issues – if something happens, pressure within the device will instantly rupture one of the ends. Other known causes of fire and damage come directly from the pen’s lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries can pose fire hazards if they are stored/left in a pressurised are like an airplane’s baggage compartment, or if significantly over-heated. Other uses of lithium-ion batteries are often less prone to such issues because they are built with plastic containers and strong structural protection, whereas the e cigarette is lightweight, small and less robust.

How to prevent explosions

Although rare, there are known faults with e cigs as with any other portable battery-powered device. To minimise risks, you can keep yourself safe by remaining technologically savvy and handling your device with care. Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Only use the manufacturer’s charger provided when purchased or available through them: You should always use a compatible appliance which is verified by a manufacturer as it prevents any incompatibility issues. If a charger is not compatible with an e cig, it can cause sparks and even fires – not to mention it can destroy your device.
  2. Only use recommended batteries. Try not to mix different brands around and do not use old and new batteries at the same time.
  3. Don’t leave your device charging overnight: Overnight charging, although convenient, may damage your device by over-charging it, causing electrical fires. This also goes for leaving your device plugged in when it is fully charged.
  4. Do not use whilst charging: Using a vaping pen when charging runs the risk of overheating. When charging, do so on a clean, flat surface.
  5. Pay attention to voltage: The manufacturer will provide the accurate voltage to charge your device. Avoid using any port available and stick with the guide’s recommendations.
  6. Buy reputable devices from well-known suppliers: Modified devices are not trustworthy and lack proper safety protocols. To avoid any potential risk of fire, do not buy homemade devices, modified or any other suspicious device. Only buy from known companies and suppliers. Furthermore, do not modify a device yourself.
  7. Clean your device under the manufacturer’s instructions: You should clean your device as guided, cleaning the battery and terminal contents with an alcohol wipe or cloth when dirty. If you notice that your battery is either damaged or leaking, you should dispose of them immediately and appropriately.
  8. Keep your e cig protected from the elements: As with any electronic device, it is best to protect it from any extreme temperatures by avoiding either direct sunlight or freezing areas like the garage or car overnight. Certainly, never leave it outside in the open.

Until electronic cigarettes are properly regulated with strong and safe industry standards, it’s best to err on the side of caution and purchase well-known devices with safety features. Getting to know the device before purchasing — by looking through reviews and any safety information — will help you make an informed choice which is safer in the long run.
