Busting Common Vaping Myths

Busting common vaping myths - Cloudstix UK

Worried vaping will cause you more harm than good? We bust some of the most common misconceptions in this post.

Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions out there about e-cigarettes and vaping.

No doubt you will have heard the horror stories circulating in the media over the last couple of years but, unsurprisingly, there are lots of inaccuracies and fallacies about using these types of devices.

Quite often, these stories are blown way out of proportion by news outlets, and they couldn’t be further from the truth.

In this post, the experts at Cloudstix attempt to bust some of the most common vaping myths.

  1. Vaping causes ‘popcorn lung’

One headline that blew up a few years ago stated that vaping causes something called ‘popcorn lung’.

This is caused by the chemical diacetyl, a flavour compound found in several foods to give them a buttery taste.

Consuming it is completely harmless, but inhaling massive amounts can lead to bronchitis obliterans, also known as popcorn lung, which is what happened to a small number of popcorn factory workers.

Years ago, this compound was found in some e-liquids, leading to the speculation that vaping causes popcorn lung – but there’s no real evidence to support this claim.

In the UK, since the adjustment to the Tobacco Product Directive (TPD) in 2016, diacetyl has been banned from all e-liquids and here at Cloudstix, we always ensure that all of the products we stock are free from this and other potential contaminants.

  • E-cigarettes are a façade, being used so the tobacco industry can keep people smoking

As industry experts, we think this is one of the most ridiculous myths out there.

There’s currently no evidence at all that e-cigarettes encourage people to continue smoking.

In fact, the picture in the UK suggests the complete opposite and the number of vapers who are also ex-smokers has been increasing year after year.

Of the 3.6 million adult e-cig users in the UK last year, 2.4 million of them were ex-smokers. 28% of which stated their reason for vaping was to help them quit – according to a report published by Action on Smoking and Health in June 2021.

At Cloudstix, we’re committed to helping our customers ditch the cigarettes for good – providing the highest quality products to support them along the way.

  • Second-hand vapour is harmful to bystanders

There is clear evidence that inhaling second-hand smoke is dangerous for bystanders, which is why UK law prohibits smoking in enclosed, public spaces.

These laws don’t cover vaping, and organisations are free to enforce their own policies regarding the use of e-cigarettes on their premises.

E-cigarettes don’t produce tar or carbon monoxide when you smoke them, so the risks of passive smoking with conventional cigarettes don’t apply.

Although research is still ongoing, the risks from passive vaping are thought to be very small when compared to that of tobacco cigarettes.

  • Vaping is a gateway to smoking for teens

While both smoking and vaping are at an all-time low for adolescents in the UK, the negative press still continues to push the idea that vaping and e-cigarettes are acting as a gateway to smoking for them.

Recent reports have again found that there is no evidence to support these allegations, and surveys show that teens are only experimenting with vaping, and long term use is confined almost entirely to adults who already smoke.
